Upholstery Cleaning

Upholstery Cleaning in progress

A sofa takes more direct contact than any carpet in the house. Skin oils, hair products, food, drink and pet dander all transfer into the fabric, and because the soiling builds up evenly people rarely notice how far it has gone until a cushion cover comes off and the difference shows.

Upholstery needs a lighter touch than carpet. Too much water, too much heat or the wrong solution can leave watermarks, shrink the cover or bleed the dye. We match the method to the fabric and clean everything where it stands, so your sofa is not away in a van for a week.

What Is Included

  • Fabric identified and tested in a hidden area before any solution is used
  • Thorough vacuum of the frame, seams, crevices and under the cushions
  • Fabric-appropriate cleaning across arms, back, seat and cushions
  • Individual treatment of headrest and arm marks, where oils build up most
  • Cushion covers cleaned on both sides where they are removable
  • Controlled moisture so the fabric is not left soaked

How We Do It

01

Fabric check

We look for the care label and test a hidden patch. Cotton, linen, chenille, microfibre and velvet all react differently, and some cannot take water at all.

02

Dry vacuum

Crumbs, hair and grit are pulled from the seams and crevices first. On a family sofa this alone makes a visible difference.

03

Pre-treatment

Arms, headrests and any marked areas are treated first, since that is where body oils concentrate.

04

Low-moisture extraction

A hand tool works the fabric in controlled sections with much less water than a carpet would take, drawing the solution back out as it goes.

05

Grooming and drying

The pile is brushed back in one direction so it dries evenly without patchiness, then air is moved across it.

Worth Knowing Before You Book

  • Velvet and some chenille fabrics can change appearance where the pile is disturbed. We groom the pile to reduce this, but a slight change in sheen is possible.
  • Leather is a different job and needs a different product. We can advise if you have a mix of leather and fabric.
  • If a cover has never been cleaned and the dye is unstable, cleaning may lift some colour. We test for this first.

Upholstery Cleaning — Common Questions

We can usually still clean it, but we test a hidden area first. If the fabric reacts badly we will stop and tell you rather than risk the piece.

Usually two to four hours, quicker than carpet because far less water is used. Keeping a window open speeds it up considerably.

Yes. Dining chairs, armchairs, footstools and fabric headboards are all upholstery jobs and are priced by the item.

General staleness usually goes. Strong odours that have soaked into the foam beneath the cover are harder, because the source is below the fabric we can reach.
